THE FIFTEEN SENSES OF MAN: UNDERSTANDING PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL PERCEPTION
What if the greatest limitation of mankind is not what we cannot see, but what we have never learned to perceive?
Most people are introduced to the human senses through five familiar gateways:
- Sight.
- Hearing.
- Smell.
- Taste.
- Touch.
These are the senses through which we physically encounter the world, but human perception is far more complicated than the simple five-senses model we were taught in school. We do not merely experience the world through our eyes and ears....
We experience it through memory.
Through imagination.
Through reasoning.
Through intuition.
Through the will.
And within many spiritual traditions, human beings are also understood to possess forms of spiritual perception through which they discern realities that are not immediately accessible through ordinary physical observation.
This gives us an interesting framework:
- 5 physical senses.
- 5 mental senses.
- 5 spiritual senses.
Fifteen dimensions of human perception, but before we go deeper, we need to establish something important. The "fifteen senses" framework is a conceptual and spiritual model, not an established scientific classification. Science recognises sensory systems beyond the traditional five, including proprioception, vestibular sensing and interoception. Psychology also studies imagination, memory, reasoning and intuition as cognitive processes.
The spiritual senses, meanwhile, belong to spiritual and paranormal traditions and should not automatically be treated as scientifically verified abilities. The value of this framework is therefore not in pretending that every claim has been scientifically proven, its value is in asking a deeper question:
HOW MUCH OF REALITY ARE WE CAPABLE OF PERCEIVING, AND HOW MUCH OF OUR PERCEPTION IS BEING INFLUENCED BY WHAT WE HAVE BEEN TAUGHT?
That question takes us into philosophy, psychology and spirituality.
THE FIRST FIVE: THE PHYSICAL SENSES
Let us begin with the senses everyone knows.
1. SIGHT; Sight gives us access to visual information.
We see faces, colours, movement, environments, expressions and objects, but sight does not automatically give us truth. you can see something and misunderstand what you saw.
A person can smile at you while hiding pain.
A luxurious social-media photograph can represent a financially struggling person.
A confident speaker can be completely wrong.
An edited image can look real.
A visual illusion can deceive the brain.
Therefore:
SEEING IS NOT THE SAME AS UNDERSTANDING.
This distinction is extremely important in the modern world. Social media is largely an economy of sight, people show you what they want you to see.
- Luxury.
- Success.
- Beauty.
- Relationships.
- Travel.
- Money.
- Influence.
But what you see is only a fragment of reality; therefore, mature perception requires a second question:
"WHAT AM I NOT SEEING?"
That question protects the mind from becoming a prisoner of appearances.
2. HEARING; Hearing gives us access to sound, but hearing a statement does not mean that the statement is true.
- You can hear propaganda.
- You can hear gossip.
- You can hear wisdom.
- You can hear lies.
- You can hear criticism.
- You can hear encouragement.
- You can hear a preacher.
- You can hear an influencer.
The problem is not merely what enters the ear, the problem is what the mind does with what enters the ear.
This is why the Bible says:
"Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath."
James 1:19
The mature person does not merely hear.
He evaluates.
This becomes extremely important in an age where millions of voices compete for human attention; everyone has something to say, not everyone has something worth believing.
3. TOUCH; Touch gives us physical contact with our environment. It communicates temperature, pressure, texture, pain and physical interaction. Touch also reminds us that human beings are embodied creatures; we are not merely minds floating inside bodies. Our physical condition influences our psychological experience.
- Fatigue can influence judgement.
- Pain can influence mood.
- Comfort can influence behaviour.
- Physical environments can influence emotional states.
This is one reason environments matter so much in human development.
- The room you grow up in.
- The people around you.
- The conditions you experience.
- The food you eat.
- The physical safety you experience.
All these things interact with the developing human being.
4.TASTE; Taste helps us distinguish qualities of what we consume, but taste also provides us with a powerful metaphor for discernment.
You do not swallow everything simply because it is offered to you.
- You taste.
- You evaluate.
- You accept or reject.
The same principle should apply to information, every idea presented to you should not automatically become part of your worldview.
- Taste the idea.
- Examine it.
- Question it.
- Compare it with evidence.
- Then decide whether it deserves a place inside you.
The same principle applies spiritually.
Hebrews 5:14 describes mature believers as those who have their senses trained to distinguish good from evil.
There is therefore a powerful principle here:
MATURITY IS THE TRAINING OF PERCEPTION.
5. SMELL; Smell detects chemical information in our environment. It can alert us to food, smoke, chemicals, decay and other environmental signals. Interestingly, smell is also strongly connected to memory.
- A particular fragrance can suddenly transport someone into a childhood memory.
- A smell can remind you of a person you have not seen in years.
This teaches us something profound:
PERCEPTION IS CONNECTED TO MEMORY.
What we encounter today can activate what we experienced yesterday.
And that leads us into the second category.
THE FIVE MENTAL SENSES
The five mental faculties in this framework are:
- IMAGINATION.
- MEMORY.
- INTUITION.
- REASON.
- WILLPOWER.
These are not literally "senses" in the same scientific sense as vision or hearing; they are better understood as cognitive faculties through which human beings interpret, simulate, evaluate and act upon reality, and these faculties are extraordinarily powerful.
1. IMAGINATION; Imagination allows you to experience something internally before it exists externally.
- An architect can imagine a building before it is constructed.
- An entrepreneur can imagine a business before it exists.
- A writer can imagine an entire world before putting it on paper.
- A child can imagine becoming a doctor long before entering medical school.
Modern neuroscience has found that mental imagery can recruit neural systems involved in perception, which helps explain why imagination can feel surprisingly vivid, but imagination has another side. The same faculty that can help you build the future can also help you build fear.
- A person can imagine rejection before asking.
- Imagine failure before attempting.
- Imagine betrayal before trusting.
- Imagine poverty before taking a risk.
- Imagine disaster before anything has happened.
Therefore:
IMAGINATION CAN BUILD A FUTURE OR MANUFACTURE A FEAR.
You must learn to control it. Do not allow the world to become the author of your imagination, because whoever controls what you repeatedly imagine can influence what you eventually believe is possible.
2. MEMORY; Memory is the mind's relationship with the past. It allows us to learn from experience, without memory, every experience would feel like the first experience, but memory is not a perfect recording device. Human recollection can be selective and reconstructive.
This means:
YOUR MEMORY CAN TEACH YOU, BUT YOUR MEMORY CAN ALSO TRAP YOU.
Someone who was betrayed once may begin treating every future relationship as a potential betrayal.
Someone who failed once may interpret every new opportunity through the lens of failure.
Someone who grew up in poverty may continue thinking that survival is the only possible mode of existence even after their circumstances change.
Therefore, healing and maturity require learning from the past without becoming imprisoned by it.
Your past should be a teacher; it should not automatically become your prophet.
3. INTUITION; Intuition is one of the most fascinating human faculties. The APA describes intuition as an immediate insight or perception contrasted with conscious reasoning.
- Sometimes you simply feel that something is wrong.
- Sometimes you meet someone and immediately feel uncomfortable.
- Sometimes an experienced professional sees a problem before consciously explaining why.
This does not necessarily mean something supernatural happened. Sometimes intuition is the brain rapidly processing patterns from previous experience; this is why an experienced mechanic may hear an engine and immediately suspect a fault that a beginner cannot detect. The experienced person has accumulated thousands of patterns; his brain recognizes something before he consciously articulates it, but intuition can also be wrong. Psychology's dual-process framework distinguishes fast, intuitive processing from slower, analytical reasoning. Fast intuition can be useful, but it can also generate errors that deliberate reasoning fails to correct.
Therefore:
DO NOT WORSHIP YOUR INTUITION...TEST IT.
Intuition should initiate investigation, not terminate it.
4. REASON; Reason is the faculty through which we examine relationships between ideas, evidence and conclusions. It asks:
- Does this make sense?
- What evidence supports this?
- What evidence contradicts it?
- What assumption am I making?
- What alternative explanation exists?
This is one of the strongest weapons against manipulation. A manipulator wants you to react before you examine.
Reason creates a pause.
That pause can save you.
Someone says:
"Everybody is doing it."
Reason asks:
"Everybody who?"
Someone says:
"Scientists have proved it."
Reason asks:
"Which scientists? Where is the evidence?"
Someone says:
"All men are..."
Reason asks:
"All?"
Someone says:
"All women are..."
Reason asks:
"Based on what evidence?"
Reason does not kill spirituality; when properly used, reason protects spirituality from deception. It does not destroy faith, It can protect faith from manipulation.
5. WILLPOWER; Willpower is the ability to regulate behaviour in pursuit of chosen goals.
- You may know what is right and still fail to do it.
- You may know something is harmful and still continue.
- You may know you should stop scrolling and continue scrolling.
- You may know you should save money and still spend it.
- You may know someone is manipulating you and still remain because your emotions are attached.
Knowledge without self-government is incomplete.
Therefore:
THE MIND MUST NOT ONLY KNOW, IT MUST BE ABLE TO CHOOSE.
That is where willpower becomes important.
THE FIVE SPIRITUAL SENSES
Now we enter the most controversial part of the framework. The spiritual senses described in the original concept are:
- CLAIRVOYANCE.
- CLAIRAUDIENCE.
- CLAIRSENTIENCE.
- CLAIRCOGNIZANCE.
- CLAIRALIENCE.
These terms are commonly used in spiritual and paranormal traditions to describe forms of extraordinary perception; they are not established scientific sensory systems. Therefore, we should approach them carefully. We should neither blindly accept every supernatural interpretation nor dismiss every person's spiritual experience without examination. Instead, we can ask:
WHAT DOES SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT MEAN?
And from a Christian perspective, this is where the conversation becomes particularly interesting.
1. CLAIRVOYANCE — "CLEAR SEEING"
Clairvoyance is commonly described as the ability to perceive information beyond ordinary physical sight. In popular spiritual language, someone may claim to "see" something that others cannot see, but Christianity provides a different and important framework for spiritual perception. The Bible repeatedly speaks about spiritual eyes and spiritual understanding. Paul prayed that the "eyes of your understanding" would be enlightened. Ephesians 1:18.
This does not automatically mean supernatural visual powers.
It can mean understanding reality from a spiritual perspective.
A person may look at a situation and see only money.
Another sees responsibility.
One sees revenge.
Another sees forgiveness.
One sees an enemy.
Another sees a human being who needs correction.
This is a form of spiritual perception.
The greatest question therefore becomes:
WHAT ARE YOU ABLE TO SEE BEYOND THE SURFACE?
2. CLAIRAUDIENCE — "CLEAR HEARING"
Clairaudience is commonly described as receiving sounds or messages beyond ordinary hearing, from a Christian perspective, however, we must be careful not to automatically label every internal voice as GOD. The Bible itself teaches believers to test spiritual claims.
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of GOD." 1 John 4:1.
This is crucial.
SPIRITUALITY WITHOUT DISCERNMENT CAN BECOME VULNERABILITY.
A person can hear something internally and assume:
"GOD told me", but spiritual maturity asks:
- Does this agree with Scripture?
- Does it produce truth?
- Does it produce godly character?
- Can it withstand examination?
- Could this simply be my fear, desire, memory or imagination?
Not every voice deserves obedience.
3. CLAIRSENTIENCE — "CLEAR SENSING"
Clairsentience is commonly described as sensing something beyond ordinary physical perception, but human beings already possess a remarkable capacity to detect subtle environmental and social signals.
- You can walk into a room and sense tension.
- You may notice someone's facial expression, tone, posture and behaviour without consciously analysing every signal.
- Your brain may integrate these small signals before your conscious mind forms an explanation.
So when someone says:
"I just sensed something was wrong", there can be multiple possible explanations.
- It may be unconscious pattern recognition, it may be emotional sensitivity.
- It may be anxiety, It may be previous experience.
- Or, within a person's spiritual worldview, they may interpret it spiritually.
The mature response is not immediately declaring which explanation is correct.
The mature response is investigation.
4. CLAIRCOGNIZANCE — "CLEAR KNOWING"
This is perhaps the most interesting of the five.
Claircognizance is commonly described as suddenly knowing something without knowing how you know it, psychologically, this can sometimes resemble intuition. Your brain processes information beneath conscious awareness and presents the conclusion before you consciously reconstruct the reasoning, but spiritually, many people interpret such experiences as divine insight. While growing up in a prophetical denomination, they called it the gift "Word of knowledge". Again, discernment becomes essential.
- A thought arriving suddenly does not automatically make it divine.
- A strong feeling is not automatically revelation.
- A coincidence is not automatically a message.
The mature person learns to distinguish:
"I feel this"
from
"I know this"
and from
"GOD has revealed this."
Those are three different claims.
5. CLAIRALIENCE — "CLEAR SMELLING"
Clairalience is commonly described as perceiving smells without an identifiable physical source. This is a spiritual/paranormal claim rather than an established scientific sensory ability, and there are many possible explanations for unusual sensory experiences, including memory associations, environmental sources that are difficult to identify and neurological phenomena. Therefore, unusual sensory experiences should not automatically be interpreted as supernatural.
This is an important principle:
SPIRITUAL MATURITY DOES NOT MEAN INTERPRETING EVERYTHING AS SPIRITUAL.
Sometimes a smell is simply a smell.
Sometimes intuition is pattern recognition.
Sometimes anxiety feels like discernment.
Sometimes imagination feels vivid.
Sometimes memory feels like presence.
Discernment is the ability to distinguish these experiences rather than confuse them.
THE REAL BATTLE: WHO CONTROLS YOUR PERCEPTION?
Now we arrive at the deeper philosophical question, why does any of this matter? Because the person who controls your perception can influence your reality, not necessarily because they control the external world, but because they can influence how you interpret the external world.
Consider social media.
Someone tells you:
"Marriage is a trap."
You repeatedly watch it.
You begin seeing marriage differently.
Someone says:
"Men cannot be trusted."
You repeatedly consume the content.
Now you interpret ordinary male behaviour through suspicion.
Someone says:
"You are unsuccessful if you are not rich by 25."
You repeatedly see luxury lifestyles.
Your internal measurement of success changes.
Someone says:
"Everybody is against you."
You begin interpreting disagreement as persecution.
The external world has not necessarily changed.
YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THE WORLD HAS CHANGED.
THIS IS WHERE THE FIFTEEN-SENSE FRAMEWORK BECOMES POWERFUL
- Your physical senses bring information.
- Your mental faculties interpret the information.
- Your spiritual worldview gives the information meaning.
- And your will determines what you do with that meaning.
Therefore:
SEEING without reasoning can produce deception.
HEARING without filtering can produce manipulation.
MEMORY without healing can produce bondage.
IMAGINATION without discipline can produce illusion.
INTUITION without testing can produce error.
SPIRITUALITY without discernment can produce superstition.
KNOWLEDGE without willpower can produce paralysis.
The mature human being learns to integrate perception.
HOW TO DEFEND YOURSELF FROM THE NARRATIVES OF THE WORLD
If the modern world is constantly competing for your attention, how do you remain free?
You develop what I call: PERCEPTUAL SOVEREIGNTY.
Perceptual sovereignty means developing the ability to observe the world without surrendering your interpretation of it to the world.
You see.
You hear.
You feel.
You think.
You remember.
You imagine.
You discern.
But you do not automatically surrender.
Here is the blueprint.
1. QUESTION WHAT YOU CONSUME
Ask:
- Who created this message?
- Why was it created?
- What emotion is it trying to produce?
- What does the creator gain if I believe it?
- What evidence supports it?
- What evidence contradicts it?
- What information has been excluded?
- This is especially important on social media.
Your attention is valuable.
Do not give unlimited access to your mind.
2. SEPARATE OBSERVATION FROM INTERPRETATION
This is one of the most powerful psychological disciplines.
"I saw him talking to another woman."
That is observation.
"Therefore, he is cheating."
That is interpretation.
"I saw someone disagree with me."
Observation.
"They hate me."
Interpretation.
"She has not replied to my message."
Observation.
"She doesn't respect me."
Interpretation.
Learning to separate the two can dramatically improve your judgement.
3. TEST YOUR INTUITION
When you feel something strongly, do not immediately obey it.
Ask:
- What exactly am I sensing?
- What evidence supports it?
- Could my past experience be influencing me?
- Could fear be influencing me?
- Could desire be influencing me?
- What would I conclude if I had no emotional attachment?
- Intuition becomes more useful when combined with reflection.
4. TRAIN YOUR IMAGINATION
Do not allow social media to become the primary author of your imagination.
- Imagine yourself solving problems.
- Imagine building.
- Imagine learning.
- Imagine becoming disciplined.
- Imagine serving.
- Imagine creating.
- Imagine becoming the person you believe GOD has called you to become.
Your imagination should not merely consume the world's pictures, It should produce your own.
5. GUARD YOUR MEMORY
Learn from your past without worshipping it.
You were betrayed?
Learn.
You failed?
Learn.
You were rejected?
Learn.
You grew up in poverty?
Learn.
But do not automatically convert an experience into a universal law.
One bad relationship does not prove that love is a lie.
One failed business does not prove that entrepreneurship is impossible.
One hypocritical religious person does not prove that GOD is false.
One corrupt leader does not prove that leadership itself is corrupt.
Memory must become wisdom, not imprisonment.
6. DEVELOP REASON
Read outside your ideological bubble.
Study opposing arguments.
Ask difficult questions.
Look for primary evidence.
Distinguish facts from opinions.
Distinguish correlation from causation.
Distinguish personal testimony from empirical evidence.
The goal is not to become skeptical of everything.
The goal is to become difficult to deceive.
7. BUILD SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT
For the Christian, spiritual perception must remain anchored in CHRIST and Scripture.
Romans 12:2 says: "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
Notice the relationship:
TRANSFORMATION>>>RENEWAL>>>MIND.
Christian spirituality is therefore not merely about having spiritual experiences, It is also about having a renewed mind.
8. DEVELOP YOUR WILL
You can know the truth and still choose the lie.
You can know what is healthy and still choose what destroys you.
You can know you should leave and remain.
You can know you should begin and still procrastinate.
Therefore, perception must eventually become action.
A person who sees clearly but cannot govern himself is still vulnerable.
THE LEMON TEST
There is a simple exercise that demonstrates the power of mental imagery.
Close your eyes.
Imagine a lemon.
See its yellow skin.
Imagine holding it.
Feel its texture.
Imagine cutting it.
Hear the knife moving through it.
Imagine bringing it close to your nose.
Smell it.
Now imagine squeezing it into your mouth.
Imagine the sour taste.
You may notice your mouth beginning to respond.
Why?
Because imagination can recruit systems involved in perception and bodily response. Research on mental imagery shows substantial overlap between imagery and perceptual processing. This simple exercise reveals something profound:
THE MIND CAN SIMULATE EXPERIENCE.
And that is precisely why psychological manipulation can be so powerful.
If someone can repeatedly control what you imagine, fear, remember and anticipate, they may influence your behaviour without physically controlling you.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AWAKENING AND DELUSION
This is where I believe many conversations about "awakening" go wrong.
Awakening does not mean believing every unusual experience.
It does not mean assuming every coincidence is supernatural.
It does not mean believing every voice in your head.
It does not mean rejecting science.
It does not mean rejecting reason.
True intellectual and spiritual maturity should make you MORE capable of distinguishing reality from imagination.
The goal is not to become gullible to the invisible.
The goal is to become discerning about both the visible and invisible dimensions of human experience.
PHILOSOPHY ASKS:
"What is reality?"
PSYCHOLOGY ASKS:
"How does the human mind perceive and interpret reality?"
SPIRITUALITY ASKS:
"What does reality mean beyond the merely material?"
AND WISDOM ASKS:
"How do I live correctly in light of what I have discovered?"
THE FIVE PHYSICAL SENSES GIVE YOU DATA.
THE MENTAL FACULTIES GIVE YOU INTERPRETATION.
SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT GIVES YOU A FRAMEWORK OF MEANING.
AND WILLPOWER TURNS PERCEPTION INTO ACTION.
This is why the human being is more complex than what he sees in the mirror.
- You are an experiencing being.
- A remembering being.
- An imagining being.
- A reasoning being.
- A choosing being.
- And, for those who believe in GOD, a spiritual being.
THE FINAL QUESTION
The greatest danger is not that the world will control your body.
The greater danger is that it will control your interpretation of reality.
If somebody can tell you what to fear...
what to desire...
who to hate...
who to trust...
what success means...
what love means...
what marriage means...
what GOD means...
what you are capable of...
then they have already gained influence over your life.
This is why you must train your perception.
Do not merely see.
LEARN TO OBSERVE.
Do not merely hear.
LEARN TO FILTER.
Do not merely remember.
LEARN TO INTERPRET.
Do not merely imagine.
LEARN TO CREATE.
Do not merely intuit.
LEARN TO TEST.
Do not merely believe.
LEARN TO EXAMINE.
Do not merely receive information.
LEARN TO THINK.
And do not merely experience spirituality.
LEARN TO DISCERN.
Because the ultimate freedom of a human being is not the ability to believe whatever he wants.
It is the ability to encounter the world without surrendering his mind to it.
"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.", 1 Thessalonians 5:21
Your senses are gateways.
Your mind is an interpreter.
Your spirit is where you seek meaning.
Your will is where you choose.
And your character is what eventually reveals what you have chosen to believe.
So perhaps the question is not: "How many senses do I have?"
The deeper question is:
"HOW WELL HAVE I TRAINED THE SENSES, FACULTIES AND DISCERNMENT THROUGH WHICH I EXPERIENCE THE WORLD?"
Because you can have eyes and still fail to see.
You can have ears and still fail to hear.
You can have intelligence and still fail to reason.
You can have intuition and still misinterpret it.
You can have spiritual language and still lack discernment.
And you can have knowledge without possessing the wisdom to live by it.
THE GOAL IS NOT SIMPLY TO PERCEIVE MORE.
THE GOAL IS TO PERCEIVE BETTER.
And perhaps that is where genuine awakening begins.
I hope this blog post helps you to be self aware and, most especially, i hope it helps you to learn how to navigate the world without being a victim of its propaganda. The next post will be about the 12 types of intelligence and how we can identify ours, and also how to make use of it in the best possible ways. We will also be learning self knowledge and world knowledge and how we can align our intelligence in the right paths with them. Shalom.
